Cosmetic Nose Surgery

Cosmetic Nose Surgery is very common for both men and women who may be disatissfied with their noses appearance or nasal function. Nose surgery can resolve problems from trauma to the nose to genetics, by modfiying, adjusting and rectifying size, shape and proportion of your nose.

Your nose is one part of the body that does not stop growing even after puberty, and therefore we all experience the sensation of our noses expanding in size and changing shape as we age. Your nose is one of the most prominent features on your face. It provides the framework to which our facial features are built around.

Surgical Warning: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes or repairs the nose, enhancing facial harmony and can minorly address functional issues such as breathing complications. It can modify nose size, shape, and proportion to meet desired appearances.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair and correct the septum, which is the cartilage wall separating the nostrils. A deviated septum can cause breathing difficulties and other nasal problems.

Which type of Nose Surgery do I need?

Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty are two distinct surgical procedures that focus on different aspects of the nose. Here are the differences between Nose Surgery options:

Purpose:
  • Rhinoplasty is primarily a cosmetic procedure aimed at changing the shape and appearance of the nose to enhance facial harmony. It can also correct some breathing issues.
  • Septoplasty is a more functional surgery aimed at correcting a deviated septum to improve airflow through the nose and resolve breathing problems. It is not intended for altering the appearance of the nose, although in some cases, slight changes may occur.
Nose area operated on:
  • A Rhinoplasty involves changes to the bone, cartilage, skin, or all three components of the nose.
  • Whereas, a Septoplasty focuses on the interior of the nose by solely straightening the septum, which is the cartilage and bone dividing the two nostrils.
Procedure:
  • Depending on the desired outcome, Rhinoplasty can be performed via an open approach (external incision) or a closed approach (incisions hidden inside the nose). It may involve reshaping the nasal structure, refining the nasal tip, altering the angle between the nose and the upper lip, and sometimes narrowing the span of the nostrils.
  • Whereas, Sceptoplasty is performed entirely through incisions with the nostrils, hence no external scars. It involves trimming, repositioning, and replacing cartilage or bone to straighten the septum.
Recovery:
  • Rhinoplasty involves more bruising and swelling compared to Septoplasty. Splints and internal tubes are necessary during the initial recovery phase, which can last from one to two weeks, with residual swelling lasting up to a year.
  • Septoplasty is usually quicker with many patients resuming normal activities within a week.

It’s important for patients to have a clear understanding of their goals and to discuss these with our qualified Plastic Surgeons who can recommend the most appropriate procedure or a combination of both, known as septorhinoplasty, to address both functional and aesthetic concerns.

Scarring depends on the technique used; open rhinoplasty may leave a small, barely noticeable scar at the base of the nose, while closed rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible scars. Septoplasty will not leave visible scars as it is more internal based surgery.

  • Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery can be performed on any part of the nose to reshape, reduce or increase the size or modify the nostrils, tip, or bridge of the nose to create a natural balance and proportion with the facial features.
  • Septoplasty Nose Surgery is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated septum to improve nasal airflow by straightening the bone and cartilage dividing the nostrils.

Recovery time varies depending on the type and extent of the nose surgery. For rhinoplasty, initial recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks, with residual swelling lasting up to a year. Septoplasty recovery is usually quicker, with most patients resuming normal activities within a week.
